As everyone sits at home waiting and hoping for the coronavirus pandemic to end, sports fans are hoping that play can resume as soon as possible. Leagues like the NBA hope to pick up right where they left and have enough time to play postseason basketball. Heck, the coronavirus became real for all of us when Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert tested positive before a game between the Utah Jazz and Oklahoma City Thunder. The game was cancelled, then the season, the pretty much life was cancelled. Now here we are a month later, still wondering when life will get back to normal. And for the NBA, wondering when the season will pick back up again?
Now I’m no doctor nor do I have a crystal ball to see into the future. But in my honest opinion, I don’t see how there is anyway the NBA season can or will continue. For one, while we here in New York are starting to see progress and a flattening of the curve, other parts of the country are seeing increases of cases and will become the next “hot spot” in terms of the outbreak. So traveling back and forth between arenas is going to be impossible. Some have floated an idea similar to what MLB has proposed in that all games would be played in Las Vegas and you would have players and coaches quarantined along with no fans in attendance. While in theory this doesn’t sound like an awful idea, it’s going to be difficult to convince players to isolate themselves from their families and play these games. Plus, even if you do testing for all the players, there is still a very good chance one player could contract the virus and thus stop the league again.
Plus the big question I think the NBA needs to ask itself it how long can you wait before it becomes too late to finish the season? Let’s just say they skip the rest of the regular season and go straight into the playoffs, you have say 2-3 months to complete the playoffs start to finish. So if we are doing the math the latest the NBA could start the playoffs would be July and hopefully end sometime around September. Even then the start of the following season would be thrown off and honestly that is really pushing it. I think the latest you can have playoff games is more likely in June. Now a lot could happen between now and then, but it’s safe to say even two months from now playing basketball games or any sports in the United States really doesn’t seem possible.
The NBA and the rest of the world is at the mercy of the coronavirus. How long do we need to social distant? When can people return to work? When will schools and businesses reopen? No one has any freaking clue. But hearing from multiple health officials, this virus is going to go on for several more months and maybe even years worst case. As much as I want to see the NBA back in action, I just don’t see any way the league finishes the season. Let’s juts hope for all of our sake that I am dead wrong.
